Christmas Tree Safety Reminder

Live Christmas trees can be a beautiful part of the holidays—but if they dry out, they can become a serious fire hazard.

Highland Beach Fire Rescue reminds residents with live Christmas trees to keep them well watered.

Quick Tips for a Safer Tree:
• Trim & Hydrate: Cut 2 inches off the trunk before placing in water.
• Keep Watered: Check the stand daily to ensure it never runs dry.
• Safe Placement: Keep at least 3 feet away from heaters, fireplaces, and vents.
• Lights Matter: Use tested, approved lights and inspect cords for damage.
• Turn Off When Away: Always turn off tree lights before leaving home or going to bed.
• Dispose Promptly: Remove the tree once it dries out or after the holidays.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) shows how quickly a dry tree can ignite.
