8 Simple Steps to Stay Safe at Home
Falls are a leading cause of injury, especially among older adults. Highland Beach Fire Rescue encourages all residents to follow these eight essential steps to help reduce the risk of falls at home and in the community.
1. Use Non-Slip Mats and Install Grab Bars
Place non-slip mats inside and outside tubs and showers.
Install grab bars near the toilet, bathtub, and shower for stability.
2. Eliminate Tripping Hazards
Secure loose rugs with non-skid backing or pads.
Keep walkways clear of cords, shoes, and clutter.
Smooth out wrinkles in carpets and be cautious of uneven surfaces.
3. Improve Lighting Indoors and Outdoors
Use night lights in hallways and bathrooms.
Ensure stairs have lighting at both the top and bottom.
Turn on lights before using stairways.
4. Wear Safe Footwear
Choose low-heeled, non-slip shoes with good support.
Avoid slippers, thick-soled shoes, or walking in socks.
5. Keep a Medication List and Review It Regularly
Keep an updated list of your medications on the fridge or in your wallet.
Share it with a caregiver or doctor.
Ask if any medications might affect your balance or alertness.
6. Exercise to Improve Balance and Strength
Regular physical activity improves coordination and stability.
Talk to your doctor about exercises that are safe for you.
7. Move Carefully and Take Your Time
Sit up and stand slowly to prevent dizziness.
Pause before walking to get your balance.
Stay aware of your surroundings, especially when getting up or walking.
8. Prepare for Emergencies
Consider subscribing to a medical alert system for instant help.
Ensure clear access to all areas by keeping floors and stairs free of obstacles.
Install handrails along full stair lengths for added safety.
